Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • Baking sheet
  • Pastry brush
  • Parchment paper

Ingredients

For the Dough:

  • 2 ¼ tsp 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water about 110°F / 45°C
  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp olive oil

For the Garlic Butter Topping:

  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter melted
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp dried oregano optional
  • 1 tbsp fresh parsley chopped
  • ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese optional

Instructions

Activate the Yeast:

  • In a small bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.

Make the Dough:

  • In a large bowl, combine flour and salt.
  • Add the yeast mixture and olive oil, then mix until a dough forms.
  • Knead on a lightly floured surface for 5-7 minutes, until smooth and elastic.

Let the Dough Rise:

  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm spot for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

Shape the Knots:

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces.
  • Roll each piece into a 6-inch rope, tie it into a knot, and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

Bake to Perfection:

  • Bake for 15-18 minutes, or until golden brown.

Prepare the Garlic Butter:

  • While the knots are baking, mix melted butter, minced garlic, salt, oregano, and parsley in a bowl.

Brush & Serve:

  • Brush the warm knots with garlic butter and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese if using.
  • Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temp for 2 days, or freeze for 2 months. Reheat in the oven at 300°F (150°C) for 5 minutes.
Substitutions:
  • Use garlic powder instead of fresh garlic for a milder flavor.
  • Swap Parmesan for mozzarella for a cheesier twist.
  • Add red pepper flakes for a spicy kick.
